          long checked for .XYZ, we continue to do so in case anyone is
          relying on it, but also check for the other extensions.

          "69").  However, the gradient reading from a topofil is typically in
          the range 0 to 180, with 90 being horizontal.  Really we should allow
          the valid range to be specified, but for now we infer it from the
          zero error - if this is within 45 degrees of 90 then we assume the
          range is 0 to 180.

          already do no colouring and hide the key when there's nothing to
          colour by, and it's annoying to have the actual mode changed if you
