    22=========================
    33
4 If you are using Debian Linux or RedHat Linux or a distribution based
5 on one of these, you might prefer to install one of the prepackaged
    6 Linux versions.
4If you are using Debian Linux or Ubuntu Linux or a distribution based
5on one of these, you will find it easier to install one of the
     6prepackaged versions of Survex.
    77
8 Otherwise building from source is very easy.  At a shell prompt, enter
    9 the following commands:
8Otherwise building from source is very easy.  First of all, you need
9to make sure you have the required libraries installed.  The main
     10dependency is a *non-unicode* build of wxWidgets 2.6 or later - if there's a
11suitable wxWidgets package for your platform, then just use that (note: library
12packages are usually split into runtime and development, usually with the same
13name but with a -dev or -devel or similar suffix on the latter - you'll
     14need both to build Survex).
     15
16Otherwise download the source code from http://www.wxwidgets.org/ and
17follow their build instructions.  IMPORTANT: For Survex 1.0, you must disable
18wide character Unicode support by adding --disable-unicode to the configure
     19command line.
     20
21You'll also need a working C and C++ compiler, and also the X development
22libraries if these aren't pulled in by installing wxWidgets.
     23
24Then at a shell prompt, enter the following commands:
    1025
    1126./configure

    1328make install
    1429
15 By default `make install' will try to install survex under /usr/local, which
16 means you'll need to be root for the `make install' stage.  You can tell
17 configure to install survex elsewhere (e.g. under your home directory) like
    18 so:
30By default 'make install' will try to install survex under /usr/local,
31which means you'll need to be root for the 'make install' stage.  You
32can tell configure to install survex elsewhere (e.g. under your home
     33directory) like so:
    1934
    2035./configure --prefix=/home/olly/survex
    2136make
    2237make install
     38
39If your wxWidgets installation isn't picked up automatically, or you
40have more than one version installed and want to select a particular
41one, then you can specify this like so:
     42
     43./configure WX_CONFIG=/opt/bin/wx-config
     44
45You can use both --prefix and WX_CONFIG= if necessary.
